Farmers Protests: Unions to hold talks with government on Dec 29

Joint Secretary in Agriculture Ministry Vivek Agarwal had written a letter to farmer unions on Dec 24 for the next round of talks.

The farmer unions protesting against the three farm laws on Saturday proposed holding the next round of talks with the government on December 29.

Making the announcement at the joint press conference at Singhu border here, Swaraj India president Yogendra Yadav said the government has asked for talks with farmer unions.

“We are making this proposal on the behalf of Sanyukt Kisan Morcha after talking to all organisations that talks between representatives of farmers and the central government should be held on December 29 at 11 am,” he said.

“The first two points in our agenda for talks are- modalities to repeal the three farm laws, and mechanism and procedure to bring a law for providing a legal guarantee on MSP,” Yadav added.

He said there was “letter diplomacy” and the central government has written to them to hold talks.

“Letter diplomacy is going on. We reply to the letters sent by the central government in about two days and the government replies to our letter within hours. Within a few hours of our last letter, Joint Secretary of Agriculture Ministry wrote to us and proposed talks. So, we have decided to go for talks,” he said.

Joint Secretary in Agriculture Ministry Vivek Agarwal had written a letter to farmer unions on December 24 urging them to decide the date and time for the next round of talks.

He had said in the letter that the government is committed to “reach logical solutions” on issues raised by farmer unions and has an “open mind”.

The Prime Minister, who addressed an event on Friday to release next instalment under PM-KISAN scheme, had said that the central government is ready for discussions to address apprehensions concerning the farm laws at any time.

The farmer unions had on December 23 rejected the government proposal for talks, urging it not to repeat the “meaningless amendments” which have been rejected before and to come up with a concrete proposal in writing.

The agitation by farmers on the borders of the national capital entered its 31st day on Saturday. Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava visited Singhu border (Delhi-Haryana border) where farmers are protesting against the Centre’s farm laws.

The farmers are protesting against Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. They are demanding the repeal of the three laws.

The farmer unions have held five rounds of talks with the government and attended a meeting called by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

8 People returning to Kerala from UK test COVID-19 positive

A new strain of the COVID-19 was detected in the UK. As per the experts, this strain is more transmissible than other SARS-CoV-2 variants.

At least eight persons who returned from the United Kingdom (UK) to Kerala have tested COVID-19 positive and their swab samples have been sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune for further examination, Health Minister KK Shailaja said on Saturday.

“Research conducted by the Health Department in Kozhikode shows a slight change in the strain of the virus. To be sure, we are conducting this research in all districts of Kerala. This strain is not like the one found in the UK,” Shailaja said in Kannur.

The Health Minister said that there is no need to panic as the death rate in the state due to COVID-19 is still below 0.5 per cent but she added that people need to maintain a strict vigil.

Last week, the new strain of the coronavirus was detected in the UK. As per the experts, this strain is more transmissible than other SARS-CoV-2 variants.

He wrote, “In 6 days, I will be telling you about something that took a lot of time and courage to create and decide to show it to the world. I can’t help but remember the beginning when I stood from afar and looked at the thought of doing this, not knowing what lies ahead. Not knowing the kind of project I had embarked on without even realizing it. SO EXCITEDDDDDD

Many people tried to guess what the big news will be. Some of them guessed that the person standing on the lighthouse is Mr Ratan Tata.

Another Hint Dropped On Instagram

Shantanu posted another message on his Instagram 4 days ago. It said,” 4 DAYS TO GO!!!! As time went by and, I kept creating and shaping what I’m about to show you in 4 days, I came face to face with a lot of challenges and blessings in my life. All the proceeds of this book go to Sparsh Trust an upcoming hustling animal welfare organisation doing great work.
.
The thought behind this book has always been that the privilege of knowing Mr Tata personally should not be limited to me alone. There are shades of him other than a humble businessman which I have tried my best to capture in this light-hearted narration. I also wanted to talk about how genuine and wholesome intergenerational friendships can be, and @sanjanadesai.art emotion-drenched illustrations definitely help with that.
A heartfelt note from Mr Tata inside, something he wrote when he finished reading the manuscript.”

Rahul Gandhi-Govt will have to listen to protesting farmers

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that the government will have to listen to the farmers protesting against the new farm laws.

Rahul Gandhi posted a video of protesting farmers and wrote: “Mitti ka kann kann goonj raha hai, sarkar ko sun na padega—The government will have to listen (to the farmers).” Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury visited Rashtrapati Bhavan on December 24.
Rahul Gandhi submitted the party memorandum having two crore signatures to President Ram Nath Kovind for the repeal of the farm laws, against which farmers are protesting on the Delhi borders since last month.

“I told the President that these farm laws are anti-farmer. The country has seen that farmers have stood up against these laws,” Gandhi had said.

Javadekar challenges Rahul Gandhi, DMK for debate on farm laws

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar has challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for an open debate on whether the farm reforms introduced by the Centre are in the interest of farmers or not.

“Rahul Gandhi suddenly said you will (Centre government) have to withdraw the new farm laws. I am giving him an open challenge for a debate, whether the laws are good, in the interest of farmers or not. I am giving challenge to Rahul Gandhi and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to debate,” Javadekar said while addressing farmers in Chennai. Rahul Gandhi on Thursday called the farmer protests a ‘Satyagraha’ and urged the people to support the farmers agitating against the three farm laws passed by the Central government.

Citing a media report alleging the new laws used to dupe farmers, Rahul Gandhi had tweeted: “Farmers in India are agitating against anti-agricultural laws to avoid such a tragedy. In this Satyagraha, we all have to support the anna data of the country.”

December 26th: Boxing Day - The Day After Christmas - Digpu

Background

It is said that this day is used to get rid of the Christmas Gift boxes. The empty gift cartons are given away or thrown away on this day. This tradition dates back to the middle ages in England. Another theory is that people fill those empty gift cartons with small gifts or leftover food from the Christmas dinner and give it to the house help or servants. This was done as 26th December would be the first working day after Christmas for them.

It is also said that on this day, the priests of Churches open the Alms Boxes after Christmas. These boxes contain money which was donated by people to the needy or poor. There are many churches that still follow this rule even today.
