Meatless Diet may cause a higher risk of bone fractures

Study showed that vegans have lower BMI as well as lower intakes of calcium and protein than meat-eaters

London (UK) :

While following a vegetarian diet can be healthy, it has to be ensured that enough important nutrients like calcium, B12 vitamin, zinc, iron are included in the diet as it can increase the risk of bone fractures for people following a meatless diet.

According to a study published in the open-access journal of BMC (BIOMED CENTRAL), people who follow a vegan diet, vegetarians, and people who ate fish but not meat lacked calcium and protein required by the body and had a 43 per cent higher risk of bone fractures (total) as well as higher risks of site-specific fractures of the hips, legs, and vertebrae, compared with people who ate meat.

While following a vegetarian diet can be healthy, it has to be ensured that enough important nutrients like calcium, B12 vitamin, zinc, iron are included

Dr Tammy Tong, Nutritional Epidemiologist at the Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford, and the lead author said, “We found that vegans had a higher risk of total fractures which resulted in close to 20 more cases per 1000 people over a 10-year period compared to people who ate meat. The risks in vegans were 2.3 times higher than in people who ate meat, equivalent to 15 more cases per 1000 people over 10 years.”

A team of researchers at the Universities of Oxford and Bristol, UK analysed data from nearly 55,000 people in the EPIC-Oxford study, who were recruited between 1993 and 2001, many of whom do not eat meat. They were observed over a period of time to understand how certain factors like diet may affect certain outcomes including fracture risk.

Out of the 54,898 participants included in the present study, 29,380 ate meat, 8,037 ate fish but not meat, 15,499 were vegetarians, and 1,982 were vegans at the time they were recruited. Initially, their dietary habits were evaluated at the time of recruitment, and then again in 2010. The candidates were observed continuously for 18 years on average, until 2016 for the occurrence of fractures, the study says.

While assembling the whole observations, the researchers reported total of 3,941 fractures, including 566 arms, 889 wrists, 945 hips, 366 legs, 520 ankles, and 467 fractures at other main sites (clavicle, ribs and vertebrae).

The authors did not observe any major differences in risks among the diet groups for arm, wrist or ankle fractures once BMI was taken into account. Instead, differences in risk of fractures were partly reduced once BMI, dietary calcium, and dietary protein intake had been taken into account.

Dr Tong said: “This study showed that vegans, who on average had lower BMI as well as lower intakes of calcium and protein than meat-eaters, had higher risks of fractures at several sites. Well-balanced and predominantly plant-based diets can result in improved nutrient levels and have been linked to lower risks of diseases including heart disease and diabetes.”

While the researchers have already concluded their study in the journal, they are still cautious about the authenticity of the measurement data, on the other hand. According to them, they were unable to differentiate between fractures that were caused by a fall from standing height and those that were caused by accidents.

The data of differences in calcium and protein intake between the different diet groups were also unavailable which is subject to measurement error.

According to the authors, “The study predominantly included white European participants, generalisability to other populations or ethnicities may be limited, which could be important considering previously observed differences in bone mineral density and fracture risks by ethnicity.”

On the whole, more studies would be required including different populations from different regions, as well as cohorts with a certain proportion of men and women to explore possible differences causing the risk.

Bharti Singh and husband Haarsh got the bail from Mumbai court

Both were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for alleged possession of cannabis

Mumbai (Maharashtra)

November 23, 2020: A special (Narcotics) court in Mumbai on Monday granted bail to comedian Bharti Singh and her husband Haarsh Limbachiyaa in connection with a drugs case.

“Both of them (Bharti and Haarsh) have been granted bail by the court on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 15,000 each. No reply was filed by the NCB yet. A notice was issued to them on Sunday itself,” advocate Ayaz Khan, Singh’s lawyer, said.

The two, who were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for alleged possession of cannabis, were on Sunday sent to judicial custody till December 4 by a Mumbai Court.

Singh was held on Saturday while Limbachiyaa was arrested on Sunday.

The NCB had on Saturday raided the production office and house of comedian Bharti Singh and recovered 86.5 grams of ganja (cannabis) from both places. The NCB had earlier raided a place in the Khar Danda area and nabbed a trafficker aged 21 years with various drugs including 15 blots of LSD (commercial quantity), ganja (40 grams), and Nitrazepam (psychotropic medicines).

In follow up and in corroboration with previous inputs, the NCB raided Singh’s production office and house.

This comes as the probe, which began from the drug case in connection with the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, continues to widen to the alleged drug abuse by Bollywood celebrities.

Notably, a raid was also conducted at the residence of actor Arjun Rampal, after which he and his girlfriend were summoned by the NCB for questioning in the matter.

Frank Lampard says ‘we are improving but cannot get carried away’

Frank Lampard says ‘we are improving but cannot get carried away’

Chelsea are currently placed in the third spot on the Premier League table with 18 points

London

November 23, 2020: Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is happy with how the team has performed so far and wants his side to now aim for consistency.

Chelsea are currently placed on the third spot on the Premier League table with 18 points from nine games, only behind Liverpool and table toppers Tottenham.

“The first port of call this year was to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool, who have set different levels of consistency and amassing points through a season,” the club’s official website quoted Lampard as saying.

“We are improving but we cannot get carried away with ourselves at this early stage. We have to try to reach those levels of consistency but I’m happy with where we’re at right now,” he added.

On Saturday, Chelsea secured a 2-0 win over Newcastle United and sat at the top of the table for a brief period. Lampard was quick to downplay the excitement of his side sitting briefly at the top and reiterated that attaining consistency “over a big period” is the next step for them.

“After eight or nine games, it would be very easy to get excited about being in a lofty position but I’m not going to smile too much at the league table,” he said.

“It’s nice to have three points when you’re the first game of the weekend but I knew the league table would change by the end of it. We can only worry about ourselves and our recent form has meant we’re in a decent position but doing that consistently over a big period is the next step for us now,” Lampard added.

New Delhi [India]: Digital innovation can transform Indian agriculture and the focus should be on spreading awareness about the potential of such technologies in the agriculture sector, Anna Roy, Senior Adviser (DM&A, Industry) NITI Aayog said.

She was speaking at a webinar organised by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
